The power of paint

The Power of a Great Paint Color

Color undoubtedly has the ability to alter your mood, affect your emotions, and influence your decisions. Take a look around your space right now. What colors pop out to you? How do they make you feel?

Most homes come with the standard paint colors… beige, gray, white. Which, in all fairness, those colors definitely do appeal to the masses. But color, if used correctly, has the ability to transform a space… it can give it a relaxing or energetic feel. It can make a space feel inviting or, on the other hand, make it feel cold.

I’ve worked on one-room re-designs and full home renovations and, regardless of the scale of the project, the colors have had a massive impact on the look and feel!

When thinking about paint colors, take a look around and consider the amount of sunlight the room gets. What will the room be used for? What will work with the decor? Thinking through these details can help narrow the options and avoid the dreadful paint color regret.

Paint Overwhelm

For some, going to your local hardware store to find a paint color can be fun, but for others there is a dread that comes with the endless options of colors and shades on the color wall. And, truth be told, paint can be really picky. That is when a designer can help! Not only does a designer have an understanding of color and its undertones, but they take into account the surroundings of a room that will impact how everything will work together. Believe me, you don’t want that light cream color you chose to look like butter yellow in your space!

These are some of my “go-to” paint colors:

Accessible Beige

SHERWIN WILLIAMS

My tried and true beige tone! So far, at least from my experience, it looks great in all different types of light.

Alabaster

SHERWIN WILLIAMS

A lovely soft shade of white. It reads like a bright white, but isn't highly reflective.

Pewter Green

SHERWIN WILLIAMS

A wonderful earthy green color. I have used it on walls, board & batten accents and kitchen cabinetry!

Needlepoint Navy

SHERWIN WILLIAMS

The perfect navy pigment with a slight gray undertone. Also gets extra points for being a historic color!

Greek Villa

SHERWIN WILLIAMS

Another nice bright white. Take the color on your screen with a grain of salt! This is one of my go-to’s for cabinetry and trim.

Pro tip…

Always get paint samples to start. As you can see from the color suggestions above, more often than not I use Sherwin Williams paints. They have the best paint samples - it’s a whole quart of paint!

First, pick a handful of colors to consider. Paint a few large swatches (2’ x 2’ or so, depending on the number of colors you’re sampling) on different walls within the space and “live with them” for a bit… look at the swatches at different points throughout the day to see how the change in natural light affects how the colors look and feel. You may rule out a color immediately and you will usually have one color you keep coming back to - that one is your heart’s desire! Always trust your gut.

Regardless, choosing the right color can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! If you are looking to refresh your space, but you’re not sure where to start - let’s chat
